Europe & High North
This year’s 13th Maritime Convention in Berlin was opened with the keynote speech by
Marie-Anne Coninsx, the former Ambassador of the European Union for the Arctic (EU Ambassador at Large for the Arctic). Under the title + Europe & High North +, Ms. Coninsx focused on her lecture
• the importance of the Arctic for the EU
• the geo-economic and geopolitical effects of Arctic warming
• Security aspects, including “maritime safety and security”.
For many of those present, the view of the far north must have been icy and romantic.
However, Ms. Coninsx disenchanted this idea right from the start. The huge area is much more than just “polar bears on ice”.
